A kitchen display system (KDS) on the screens you already own

See how it works

Volio's kitchen display system (KDS) opens in the browser, so the screen is the tablet on the pass or a TV on the wall. Restaurant kitchens, café counters, cocktail bars and beach club bars get every order as a ticket by table, with a timer. The kitchen reads a screen, not handwriting.

Volio's kitchen display for the demo venue: tickets for table 11 and table 3 with timers, a Done button, Recall and a running count of items
A real screen from Honest, Volio's demo venue. Table 11 in Garden and table 3 in Inner, each ticket timed, with the all-day count along the top.

On the screen above

What a ticket shows

Everything the cook needs to plate the order, and nothing to decode.

  • The table and its zone

Each ticket is headed by its table, with the order number, the time it came in and the zone under it: "Table 11, Garden".

  • A timer

It counts from the moment the order came in. The oldest ticket is never a guess.

  • Choices under each dish

Small, oat, extra shot. Guests pick them on their phone, so each one sits under its dish in plain type.

  • Done

Tap Done and the ticket leaves the screen.

  • Recall

Recall brings back a ticket closed too early.

  • The all-day count

Along the top, each item is added up across every open ticket.

Where the tickets come from

However the order was taken, the kitchen works one queue.

From a guest's phone

A guest scans the table's code, picks a dish and its options, and orders. The ticket carries the table's number.

From the waiter, the counter and the kiosk

Orders from waiter mode, the POS at the counter, the takeaway link and the self-order kiosk arrive the same way, as tickets.

And the floor sees the same orders

The orders board shows each one as new, being made or ready, marked paid or not, so the floor knows where table 11 stands without asking the pass.

Sunday, 12:30, the brunch wave

Brunch arrives all at once, flat whites and eggs for half the room inside ten minutes. On a paper rail, that's the hour slips curl and a ticket slides behind the toaster.

  1. 12:25

Table 11 orders from two phones

The flat whites with oat milk go to the bar's screen, the eggs to the kitchen's. Nobody splits the order by hand.

  2. 12:30

    Eight tables in ten minutes

The all-day count reads Eggs Benedict 11. The grill reads one number across every open ticket.

  3. 12:42

    A ticket closed too early

Recall brings it back. Nobody runs to the floor to ask what table 4 had.

  4. 12:50

Every ticket keeps its own clock

Each timer says how long its table has waited, so the pass sends out the longest wait first.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't come with a screen

Volio sells no hardware. Open the display on a tablet you already have, or on a TV with an Android or Google TV box bought anywhere.

  • It doesn't take the paper away

If the kitchen likes slips, cloud ticket printers print the same tickets, with no computer or cable to the till. A screen, a printer or both.

Questions owners ask

Something else? hello@usevolio.com

What is a kitchen display system?

A screen in the kitchen that shows each order as a ticket, in place of a printed slip. The cook sees what to make, for which table and how long it has waited, and taps the ticket done.

What hardware does the KDS need?

Any tablet, or a TV with an Android or Google TV box (not the TV's own browser). Volio sells no hardware, and the display opens like a web page.

Can drinks go to the bar and food to the kitchen?

Yes. You name your kitchen places, a kitchen and a bar for example, and each menu category is made at one of them, so a table's order splits by itself. Sending dishes to more than one place comes with the Essential plan.

Can we still print tickets?

Yes. Cloud ticket printers are an option, for the whole kitchen or beside the screen. They print without a computer or a cable to the till.

What does the cook see under each dish?

The choices the guest picked: the size, the milk, the extras. They're chosen on the phone or in the POS, so nobody reads them off a scribbled slip.

Does it show orders from the POS and from QR codes?

Both, and takeaway and kiosk orders too. They all arrive in the same queue.

Which plan has the kitchen display?

Every paid plan. See the plans and prices on this page.
